De-Ox-It's usefulness

I've read some people raving how useful De-Ox-It is as a contact cleaner. However, last time I tried it, it was with a 30A connector on a pedestal giving a spotty connection, and it didn't do much. Of course, this is not really a valid test, but I wonder if it would be good to use this on generator receptacle contacts just to protect them from the weather, since it leaves a thin oil film behind.

Any thumbs up/down on this product or suggestions?

Thanks. I got the stuff in the needle dispenser, and it is the red bottle, not Deoxit Gold. I might try to spray it on the 30A socket, then work the plug a bit to ensure it is spread evenly, although not sure if I should do it now, or wait until fall, when I can actually use my camper without the A/C being on most of the day.

While Deoxit is great stuff, and I use it all the time, it is not magic. No amount of cleaning will cure a loose, burned outlet.
  • Years ago I had a 70 Impala that had intermittent headlights. The sockets had all sorts of corrosion. I wound up using my small sand blaster inside the sockets. Problem solved.

  • I have some that I bought in the 70s and lost the cap decades ago and it's still good. I think it keeps it's physical properties forever. It's like Franks hot sauce... I put that sh_t on everything! Craig
  • There used to be a product I got at West Marine that worked great. It was a spray and left a slightly blue film on the contacts.

Of course I forgot the products name.....but it does work good.

There are two versions of De-Ox-It, the one part (Lower cost) is a decent contact cleaner but does little to protect.

The 2nd step of the 2 part (More expensive De-Ox-It-Gold) protects.
  • I use Deoxit for a lot of things. Caig also makes Deoxit Gold and Faderlube. Both of those products leave a film that will inhibit further corrosion. Since the deoxidizing part of Deoxit is a chemical reaction, it might take some time to remove heavy oxidation.

For my truck connections, I spray Deoxit and then work the opposing connector into the socket a few times to work out the debris and oxidation.
  • Use it all the time, use on my Vintage Tube Ham Radio Gear. I use it on computers. It cleared up a connection problem between my trailer and truck. I also clean the connections at the same time. Your spotty connection on the30 Amp pedestal may have been an open and due to a loose wire, all the De-Ox-It in the world wouldn't help you if that was the case. I like the product.
  • I haven't used it for the use you mentioned. I do use it for low current connections such as LED lighting. The low current has a very difficult time overcoming even the tiniest resistance. De-Ox-it does a great job of keeping those connections clean. It also works well for audio and video circuits.
