DEAD BOLT ON HOUSE

Yeah I know not RV related but...

The deadbolt on our house door is engaged and locked and we can't turn the handle to unlock the deadbolt...

Can we take the deadbolt part apart and still use the handle lock or are we looking at a whole new lock assembly?

Any quick tips, other than taking deadbolt apart, to get it unlocked for now?
  • I see this problem occasionally. My customers usually have struggled with closing and opening the lock for a bit of time before it becomes completely bound up. In most cases what has happened is that the door frame has shifted due to environmental conditions and the bolt is seizing against the strike plate. Some deadbolt strikes have close tolerance so it takes very little movement to make them stick. The solution is to realign the strike plate and lubricate the deadbolt and lock mechanism.
  • Try pulling the door towards you or up or down while rotating the inside DB latch. That may take the strain off it a bit and allow it to move.
  • oldman is right.. two screws on the inside of the lock and the lock will open. you may find the cam stripped or just bound up because of lack of lubrication. In any event it can be turned to retract the bolt. Take the two screws on the door face (one above the bolt and one below) and remove the bolt itself. Either lube up everything and get it working with graphite or toss and get a new lock. It can be easily keyed to your other locks at Lowes or HD for about 5 bucks. I do them myself since I have a lock pin set.
  • Probably looking at a bit of oil in the internal assembly. Just take the cover plate off.
