Decent RV Repair?

I took my 2011 Arctic Fox to a local RV repair place. I had never had the bearings repacked, so I wanted them done.

The service rep sold me a hundred buck inspection package. One of the inspection items was the rear passenger side wheel bearing. If that one looked bad, then (he claimed) all the bearings should be redone.

Funny thing, the inspection revealed that the bearings needed repacking. I was okay with that because that was why I took it in to begin with.

After that, things began to escalate. One thing after another needed replacing or repairing. For instance the propane pressure regulator was leaking and had to be replaced.

The biggest thing, however, was the condition of the brakes. They farmed it out to a brake shop, and their mechanic said the drums needed turning and the magnets replaced.

I had it all done---to the tune of eight hundred bucks.

After all that, I hitched up and found that the brakes wouldn't work at all! I asked them if they didn't test brakes before they returned it to the customer. The rep admitted culpability, but no real apology. Explained that he was new. I left it with them again.

The rep called me the next day and said the problem was an out of round drum on one wheel. They would install one for an additional eighty bucks for the drum and no labor charge. I asked why the other three brakes weren't providing some braking power, but their explanation was basicall a nonsequitur.

When I picked my trailer up, they explained that I shouldn't expect the breaks to work like new because the drums had been turned so many times they were thin. I told them they had never been turned before and was told that brake scoring would have the same effect.

The final result was about the same as when I took it in. (I should perhaps say that I had been noticing a lack of braking action.)

So I am $880.00 poorer and feel that my brakes might not be very safe.

I know this has been a long post, and my intention was really not to complain; rather, it is to ask what would YOU do at this point?

I would appreciate any thoughts you might have---short of shooting the repair rep (though it does come to mind!??) or trading the trailer in for a new one!
  • Sad indeed...sounds like many of the "quick lube" outfits. You go in for a simple oil change and they tell you that you need a new engine and that your vehicle needs repainting....

    $19.95 oil change becomes $10,000.
  • My experience has been similar although in smaller amounts because my first visits were much the same. They have such horrible customer service and ability it would make any mechanic go out of business in a heartbeat. I found a local mechanic that can do the smaller jobs and I switched to changing my own oil and brakes on the RV.
  • That seems a bit unreasonable but sadly pretty typical for an rv repair shop. We also have a 2003 Fleetwood Prowler. In 2008 I took it to the dealer where I bought it for new brakes and repacking the bearings. They may have done some other minor things as well that I don’t remember. The final bill was around $850. Haven’t been back since. Since I put less then 2000 miles/year on the rv, I haven’t had to do the brakes again yet and they still work great. It has EZ lube bearings that I added grease to once or twice since maybe 2012 without issue. Probably cheaper with a mobile rv repair company that will come to your place in the future if one is in your area.
  • I believe that every one should take a lesson here. RV repair shops are simply a rip off.
    any good service station could have repaired these brakes
  • My drums on my 2003 Prowler are the same ones as when it was new. I have replaced the entire brake assemblies about 5 or so years ago, just because I thought it was time and the magnets started to look a little worn.

    Sounds to me like they probably repacked the bearings, but I doubt they did anything to your brakes, except loosen up the adjustment on them so you would find they didn't work very well..

    Then, they charge you an additional $80 for a new brake drum, but I'll bet they just adjusted the original brakes so they magically work again..

    I don't have any clue what they did or did not do, but that's just my gut feeling from what I read, but I don't usually trust those kind of deals unless they show me the bad parts and that they have actually put in the new ones they are charging me for..
