Any battery is best charged slowly, but, they are not going to be killed instantly by quickly recharging them.
They will be hurt more by chronic undercharging because the battery owner believes they should only be recharged slowly.
If you are using a generator, let the batteries accept as much as they can while you choose to run the generator, and save the trickle/ slow charging for when you plug into the grid.
Also, most people you run into in everyday life are absolutely and overwhelmingly clueless about Lead acid batteries, and are spouting opinions from their friend's neighbor's dad who did something once and got either a good or bad result and made incorrect conclusions as to why that happened, and that is why the battery on a concrete floor story will never die.
Many members on this site who respond to battery threads are in the top 1% of lead acid battery knowledge. Opinions vary, and some present their opinions as facts, but in general the biggest debates are in the 6v vs 12v battery, and here is my opinion, get the 6 volts.
Get a converter capable of higher amps than you will ever use and the batteries will accept the maximum they can when you run the generator, and find ways to reduce your electrical consumption in between generator run times, like LED lights.
