Defective Propane Detector Can be a Dangerous Saftey Hazzard

For no apparent reason our propane detector has been alarming every now and then...(shuts off the supply)
We always have a burner on low most the morning keeping the coffee pot hot.
Yesterday morning while outside, the alarm sounded, so I just reached in the door (no sign of propane smell) and reset the detector, and continued to sit outside for an hour.
When I reset the detector, I gave no thought of that burner being on,
so guess what,.... when I opened the door, strong smell of raw propane hits me,.....that the detector (defective I'd guess) did not detect. I'm so glad that there was no open flame inside, or perish the thought of what could have happened.

Point of the story (reread the subject) if you have even the slightest suspicion that the detector is defective, replace it sooner rather than later !!
  • Is there a regulator on the stove that could be bad allowing too much propane thru when the burner is on low?
  • I suppose you are already onto this, but there might be more to this whole episode?

I am wondering (as you might be) if the detector is actually ok, and there is a real problem in the LP system or stove somehow. Say there is a real propane leak and that is why the alarm kept going off.

Could more propane be coming out than is being burned with the burner on low? Something. When you reset the alarm would that open the propane valve again? Did you smell the propane this time because you were just outside at a lower height than when inside where you might not smell it being higher? These may be wrong notions--I am no expert on propane issues for sure--but IMO just replacing the alarm now might not be the fix.
