Hi, If I add a MOV type device in parallel to the shore power cord will it offer some down stream protection to my RV?

No, I only want surge protection. I check before I plug in.

You really want more than just surge protection. Look into an EMS system which will protect you from under/over voltage, open ground, open neutral, reversed polarity. they are available as built-in or portable units. Progressive Industries or SurgeGuard.
