Almot,
The Sola bucks down about ten volts. Surge could be 20,000 volts.
The sola is fast at switching modes but true surge protection needs to be at the nanosecond level. I'm certain the Sola is NOT that fast.
The Sola would not prevent damage from an open neutral--because the voltage from such an event can be 170 volts or higher. Bucking on the Sola tops out at the 155 volt level lowering output to 139 volts but I would not want the output voltage to be that high--so the Sola is only "effective" to about 145 volts where it lowers output to 130 volts..
I've never seen high voltage at a campground, or anywhere else either.
The PI and SG units are quite simply BAD at surge suppression (MOV only) and poor at low voltage disconnect (too low a voltage), in my opinion.
The are good at high voltage disconnect.
Polarity, open neutral, and bad ground can be checked with a $5 device before you plug in.
They are good at time delay before reconnecting.
They do nothing to boost low voltage and that may be the #1 source of long term damage to the air conditioner motor.

How "surge suppression" is different from "bucking" that Sola does?
