I don't know what's wrong with me, but somehow in rereading the fan install thread,-- after a month away working on a rental property -- I missed the butyl tape part. Could not get an AC gasket for reasonable price, so made one out of an old truck inner tube, layered that with dicor so it goes fiberglass, dicor, rubber, dicor, fan flange.Is this ok or am I an idiot?I did check that my dicor was ok with rubber and fg.

Two answers.1: If it leaks in the first rain you experience... YES you are an idiot.However2: IF it works.. NO you are an engineer and that is what I think you are.

As long as the dicor is good you have no worries.

Not at all. The Dicor will do the job just fine - there's no reason to use anything else. You didn't even need to make the gasket.I installed two FF on our last TT with just dicor (didn't use the flimsy bubble wrap "gasket" they provided) and it was still water tight 13 years later.On our new trailer they were installed by the factory the same way, just Dicor.I would cover the edge of the inner-tube material with Dicor because it will brake down with UV if you dont protect it.

The reason to use butyl tape is because Dicor will end up gluing things down, which makes it very difficult to remove them in the future. Dicor is a LAP sealant, i.e. it's made to cover the top of a joint.

Inner tubes can last for years on a tire. Protected from sun...I think it will work.

Did I just do a stupid thing with my fan install?

That's harsh. He was doing what he thought was right. And it was right for the primary need - there shouldn't be any leaking issues. Just a lot of work (or more probably, a larger area which needs sealing) the next time the fan has to come out, which hopefully is in a long, long while.

Oh, thanks, youse guys :).

I did dicor the edge.

And then, next job, I removed a leaking window, saw what the butyl is like. Yeah, that looks like good stuff and removeable!

I sure hope I never need to remove that fan...
