The red plastic sounds like the material that is part of the final eye shaped connection to the screw that connects to the in tank sensor. If I'm correct it will only need to be either patched up or the actual conection replaced. I'd vote to patch it up as a replacement may result in more headaches. The actual sensor that is in the tank and is at the end of the connection that you are seeing chewed up wires, is not affected by the repair so long as the sensors still reflect tank levels when observing their status on your monitor. Nothing to worry about long term. Repair it and fix the insulation. That sensor is simply a none electric operation as it is acting as a ground switch that illuminates the moniter level light at the panel. Does it look like THIS
