The decision is yours but you do owe them something for trying to trace your intermittent problem. I can tell you that if you stiff them there will be a time when your name comes up over beers. Repair shop owners do talk to each other quite a bit and one of the topics is always customers who stiffed them. Whether you feel this is correct or not it does occur and when you walk in to the next shop they will be very clear and concise with what they can and will do for you. They may even refuse to work on your vehicle based on your "reputation" with another owner.
