Directv Receivers

Our Motorhome has Directv and a Winegard in-motion (single LNB) roof mounted antenna. We decided to put the coach on consignment for sale. We removed both receivers and returned them to Directv as they had directed. After some lengthy thought we decided to take the coach off the market. When talking to Directv we get all kinds of mixed messages as to what type of receivers to use and pricing. We are limited to some extent as the coach receivers are on our stick house subscription. We would like to have recorders on one or both of these receivers. Suggestions on what/where to buy will be appreciated.
  • You can use any DTV receiver with your dome. However, I would stick to an H24 or HR24 (DVR) as the H25 and higher model number receivers will require to you add the SWM8 hardware to your current setup. It's not difficult and it only costs about $100 but unless you plan to spend a lot of time in the RV it's likely not worth it. Keep in mind that if you will not be using the receiver(s) in your home when you are in the RV you can simply move the home receiver to the RV and use that until you return.
  • my son was a directv installer and he told me the same thing bill said. I wanted to do all the install and he told me it is a waste of time and money to do so since we already had the recievers that can do double duty
  • For years we used the HR24 DVR at home and in the rig including the rig in-motion dome. 3 years ago we could not get the olympics in Oregon and found SD transmission was no longer available in that area. We switched to a HD dish.

Since then there are reliable reports that DTV will stop all SD transmission in 2019. Possibly this is part of the DTV message to you as they plan for this transmission. ie No new SD accounts and push for conversion to HD.
  • Thanks to all for your input. I think we need to look for H24 type receivers. Our stick house has a Genie and three slave units and I don't think that would work in the coach. I think I'll look for a couple of H24 DVR units.

The Genie will work but you will need to add the SWM8 hardware and if you want to watch 2 different channels on 2 different TV's at the same time you will need to bring along a client. If you have wireless clients at home, all the better!
You will not get any programming in HD but that's true with the Genie or any older DTV receiver when connected to a dome. Keep in mind that if you buy H24 receivers for the RV they may stop working next year.
  • We just recently updated our house to HD with a Genie unit and a small client. Our RV has an old KVH R4 dome so I found an SWM-840 kit on Amazon for just over $50 and installed it in the RV. We bring both Genie boxes with us when we're in the RV, and once I remembered to switch them from HD to SD everything works great!
