I agree: due to cost alone, I'd replace the fuel filter first. The fact that it evidently comes and goes, and seems to come when you need full power (i.e., full fuel flow), that suggests a marginally clogged fuel filter. No fuel pump, however strong, is going to overcome a clogging fuel filter.
For future reference, when you encounter this condition, once it goes into limp mode, it is necessary for you to shut down and restart to clear the limp. CEL will go out after 3 or 4 restarts if the condition does not return.
All that is needed for a fuel filter to start clogging up on you is a little too long between filter replacements, or a little more crappy than normal fuel.
