Buying used batteries is scary. I've checked out many and most of the time the seller is not going to let you play with them much. I take a DVM and a big RC starter that I brake and use as a load test to see if the voltage drops through the floor. It's still a risk but the savings can be worth it.
There are several sellers of used telecom batteries here. One sells used 139 Ah jars for $115, used 149 Ah for $125 and new 149 Ah for $185 when he has them. Most I believe have a limited warranty like the Leoch 8-D's he has. 2 years old, unused and a year warranty for $370.
I also see a lot of " I bought this for a project that never happened" as was the case with my Lifelines. The issue there is improper care while the battery sat, again as was the case with my batteries. Luckily I am getting the knowledge of how to deal with them now and that will be worth a lot in the future.
