I would not even ATTEMPT to manage a VRB without an amp hour meter. A real one, connected exclusively to battery negative. Use kWh to establish a Charge Efficiency Ratio percentile, then use ampere hours returned as well as algorithm percentage I at value E.
Now most will moan, cross an amp hour meter off the list, then go on to complain how unnecessary all this is. The entire 5 minutes of work it takes to set it all up. It does not take a genius to set this up. But it takes a modicum of EFFORT. Oh gee look -14 amp hours. Wonder if my battery is charged. yeah "Take the cube of voltage and divide it by estimated ampere hours times two after a two hour wait and this will get you in the ballpark". Just do not blame your battery...
