There is no spring tension within the tube of a 9100 motorized awning. But there is tension from the arms that hold the awning itself.
It does sound like the motor has bit the dust. The clicking you're hearing is probably coming from the motor itself, trying to turn. Hook up a 12V battery directly to the motor and see if it works then. If not, it's time for a new motor. I just bought a new one off Ebay for $145 shipped. Most RV places are easily double that price. And it works a treat.
If you change it yourself, which isn't that big of a deal, make sure you secure the support arms so they don't spring back when the motor is removed. It can cause you some serious injury if you're not careful.
