Dometic thermostst smoked

Hi, have a friend in the CG \, has park model trailer, a month ago had a new thermostat installed (Dometic) (paid RV repair CO. $400.) part and labor, last wk it smoked up and burned out the contacts. I think she got ripped off. She would like me to put on a new one and I was thinking of a reg. "HUNTER"

Question is has any one seen this happen. I worked on heating equipment, saw it happen times when hooked to controls with high amps such as water zone valves. any info before I go at this would be appreciated. Thanks

  • Only way it could get "smoked" is if it was installed wrong. I installed a Honeywell Pro 3000, but there are lots of models (Hunters) that will work great also...Have their own power source (2 AA batts) and won't get "smoked."
  • If it actually smoked then there's way too much power going to it.
This is just running a RV furnace isn't it? Not controlling a high voltage heat source?
If it's just a garden variety furnace then I would check the voltage at the stat.
  • If that is a park model, it could be using the bi-metal thermostat that is quite different than the standard Dometic thermostats- often people mess with the anticipator, setting it too high, which burns it up.
If it is the bi-metal model, it can be replaced with a standard thermostat, but the wiring is different than any of the guides that have been published.
$400 could be outrageous, or it could be fair- depends on what all they replaced. It is outrageous that it failed so soon.
