This won't make you feel any better, but I've done lots of things more "dumba$$" than that over the years. (once forgot the key to my ATV and burnt out the electrical system trying to hotwire it... :o) It takes a big man to admit to their 'whoopsie'... Hope the fix is relatively easy, without removing the tank. My bet is, that wouldn't be a trivial task... Let us know how it goes....
