E450 cruise control quit.....need suggestions.

We went on a short in-state trip the other day and during the trip I noticed that the cruise wouldn't catch. In fiddling with it I realized that the little green indicator icon next to the speedometer is not lighting up either. After we got parked I turned the key to the "on" position with the engine off so it would show all the self-test icons on the console and the cruise control icon doesn't light then either. I hope someone can give me a clue as to what it may be. The way it just quit with no warning or no icon light makes me think it could just be a connection unplugged or something. I have a Scan gauge II and it shows no issues. Any ideas before I have to take it to a dealer would be a help.

  • Thanks guys, There is another dealer about 10 miles away. I will check with them and see if they are more interested in helping me out.

I had read that self test procedure on the internet research that wing zealot mentioned but it requires the light to blink a sequence code. I have no light, so can't do that.
  • Start by getting the pressure switch on the master cylinder replaced. There is also jumper harness with a fuse built in that should be installed (this part is FREE because it is part of the recall).

If it is not a fuse and not the master cylinder switch, it is likely the control module or the motor. The modules are expensive, but you can usually find one in a junk yard for less than $50.
  • Google the procedure for testing the cruise control system. You press the buttons in a particular sequence and it runs a self diagnosis test and a series of flashing lights will tell you what is wrong.
  • I had a problem with cruise on my Chevy 2500 last year... turned out to be the brake switch on the pedal. Chevy has a double pole/single throw switch, one side of the switch was not closing!
  • The recall was for a fire issue. I would be looking for a different dealer right about now, and maybe even talking to Ford about your experience. That is unacceptable behavior in regards to a safety recall, particularly one that is well-known and widespread and that they therefore should be thoroughly familiar with.

The recall didn't necessarily involve replacing the switch (though I think they would if it was acting up). It consisted mainly of adding an inline fuse for the circuit so that a shorted switch would blow the fuse rather than causing a fire. For some reason, the switch was apparently on an unfused, always powered circuit, so it could be a fire hazard even with the ignition turned off.
  • There may be TWO problems at work here.

The lamp test is supposed to be just that: Testing that the lamps are not burnt out....and that's ALL.....so theoretically you have a bad lamp in that position.

Then about all you can check on the cruise is look and see if your stop lights are stuck ON. Hope for that 'cause it is and easy and relatively cheap fix.

P.S. Do they all have that little triangle ? I've never seen any light indicating an engaged cruise on my 450. It is an '06 I think.
  • It is a 2004. A month or so ago I ask my local dealer if that recall was done on this rig. He said it had not but would only be done if there was an issue. I thought that recall involved a fire problem not just a malfunctioning cruise. At the time I talked to him the cruise was working fine.

Common cause is a pressure switch on the master cylinder. If it's a 04 Ford has the cruise recall been done?
