With the house battery reversed there would have been 24 volts potential between the house and the chassis positive wiring.
Should be a fusible link or breaker to protect the charging circuit from the chassis to the house. That's probably shot.
If the unit has a boost solenoid to cross connect the two battery systems, and if someone engaged it, then it became a dead short and question is what gave up first, the positive or negative connections? You may be looking at some grounds burned off. Lost grounds can cause all kinds of feedback and unpredictable crosstalk.
