Fans are not purely resistive loads, so this isn't all that precise. It would give a rough estimate at least. The startup current draw for the fans is likely a little higher than their running current, maybe quite a bit higher; rounding up in the current requirement would be a decent idea.
If one gets a variable boost supply, the fan speed could presumably be controllable, which might be handy.
