Easy way to take 12V input and create 24V output

That's the beauty of something like the DROK. Adjust the regulated output to 28.4 volts if you wish. I would however mess with the fuses and protect the circuit well ahead of the regulator with an easy to access fuse --- just in case. Mount flat not vertical. School of hard knocks --- 12F temperature difference on the heat sink with a sizeable load. The full-width heat sink of the DROK makes it a very appealing device.
