Don't know how your Tristar is equipped for dip switches. On the MPPT-15 one dip switch needs to be changed to enable the serial connection.
I couldn't get past a certain point with the software, initially. I found that under the "Devices" menu, you can manually select the controller and assign it the correct com port. That enabled me to use all of the software, program set points, and get real time information.
