Delta transformers with 120 volt service on two phases offer 277 and 208 volt service.
I've designed countless dozens of unit substations, in my days as a consulting engineer, with 25KV delta primaries and 120/208V & 347/600V wye connected secondaries (mostly with grounded wye neutral, but not all) and have not heard of the configuration you mention as being the standard in the US.
