I had not worked on the bottom end of an engine for years. When I got into it, the job was Rods and Mains on a Mitsubishi engine, and Rods only on a Toyota engine. Mitsu was a total rebuild, boring and all. Toyota was an in-frame ring job. Anyhow, here's what I learned:
The manufacturer (at least the two Japanese marques above) sized each set of bearing shells to its individual rod or main bearing. The aftermarket "complete rebuild kits" were NOT set up that way. If a shop is going to do the rebuild, we simply must know the degree of sophistication they are going to use. If a job calls for fitted bearings and they "just put a kit in it" the rebuilt engine will NOT be "good as new." Ditto for camshaft bushings, ditto for cylinder wall cross-hatch, etc etc.
