I'm loving this thread and the participation and the schooling I am getting.
I think we should take a step back from the "why"( implement such a product) and concentrate on the "how", but however it goes I say let the amps flow!!
I would be interested to know if the megawatt buzzes when absolutely maxed out, and what it maxes out at.
I would love to set my cheapowatt for 14.5v and implement the timer deal, and sometime after come back and see where things stand and adjust accordingly to reach a true 100%. But cranking it upto the desired end voltage causes it to max out and buzz, requiring dialing back the voltage until the amps drop to 36 or below.
perhaps it does not require the dialing back. If I had poor hearing and no method to take temperature perhaps I could remain blissfully ignorant of it, and it would chug along fine maxed out at 38.2 amps for 2+ hours.
But as stated, My 31's 'recommended' bulk charge rate is significantly lower than the output of this baby, and I am generally never in a rush when I do have access to 120vAC. But there have been a few instances in the past where the schumacher's 25 amps were not enough, but 38 would have been.
But my AGM group 27 seems to practically demand high charging rates, and if one believes Odyssey's recommendations of a minimum 40% rate on a deeply cycled Odyssey, and Since NorthStar AGM otherwise make many similar claims such as pure lead plates and 400 cycles to 80% dod, then high recharge rates are very beneficial on this battery too, and my observations of its ability to crank the engine faster after a high recharge rate lend credence to this theory.
But my cheapowatt's buzzing when set to a desired end voltage with a depleted battery causes me to worry about 38.2 amps causing a magic smoke release scenario. And I hate the lingering smells of magic smoke release situations, and the possible fire does not allow me comfort either.
Either way I am very happy with this product, so far. I do wonder if the burlier Megawatt would allow me the luxury of set it to 14.5v, twist a timer and forget it.
I think tonight I will deplete the AGM and repeat my test, and write down the data points, and type it afterwards so I do not lose it again, and send a Dell laptop into orbit, launched my my fury.
