MEX - Why not use a high current N chnnel MOSFET rather than the rheostat? Have a 13V or so zener at the psu output to bias the FET via a low current pot. The zener will assure consistent bias no matter what the psu output is, within reason.
There isn't control feedback either way so some tweaking during the charge cycle would still be required.
using a very low value sense resistor to create feedback would be the ideal solution for external current control.
