The trend developing lately is EV owners taking the position that charging their EV’s ought to be free everywhere, presumably because they’re doing so much good for society by driving one.
In our case we installed a charging port on our office to support our two Tesla’s.
Then we started to notice unexplained consumption, we installed our own usage meter and log how many kw/h’s each vehicle uses, we would see 20 or 25 kw/h of consumption a couple of times a week. We added a lock to the receptacle enclosure, that lasted 2 days and the lock was gone.
We added an extra camera on the building facing the charging station. Upon reviewing the footage we saw a Nissan Leaf pull in around 10 or 11pm, plug in, and the owner walk away. The next morning around 6 or 7am a man would jog up the street, unplug and drive away. We had an employee who lived very close keep an eye on the place, sure enough a week later he spotted the car pulling in. He circled back around and moved e of the trucks to ‘box in’ the Leaf and turned off the charge circuit.
Around 7am I got a phone call from the local police. The Leaf owner had called them when he returned to his car and found it blocked in.
The Leaf owner was furious and demanding the police charge ME for ‘kidnaping’ his car!
It seems he lived in a nearby condo, which refused to install an EV charging station, and so he ‘had to’ use our place to charge his car.
The police pointed out that iwhat he was doing was trespassing on private property and theft of electricity. Couldn’t convince him. He was given a stern warning, and hasn’t been back since, but did post some pretty outlandish stuff on social media about it.
Wow,,
You let him of too easy,,Id have his car towed and impounded..make him pay nice stiff fine would be a good leson..
