So does the electricity just appear in the transmission lines by magic? No. There is still an energy source inputting into these lines. Wind, solar? Sure but for every MW of renewables on the grid there is a generator somewhere sitting as spinning reserve so that if the wind stops or the cloud goes over the sun we still have our modern convieniences of AC and electric cars. Sure the spinning reserve is unloaded and is usually a percentage of grid MW and not a 1:1 ratio, but it is still there burning fossil fuels. There is no free energy, but electricity off the grid has a great way of diverting the emissions to a remote location so that you can feel good about it because you are not next to the source.
