Exterior Light / Motion Detector swap out

I Purchased a Smart Light 1000 which is an exterior light / motion detector. The installation says to disconnect the battery before replacing the existing 12 volt light.

My question is, do I really have to disconnect the battery or can I just handle one lead at a time similar to a plug swapout for a 110 outlet?

Well you will not be electrocuted. Short to ground will open the fuse.
But honestly having the switch in the off position is fine.

That depends on you. But if you've done it on AC, then no worries. I always get beat up wiring things hot, but it adds to the excitement..

Just don't make any big sparkys or you'll be looking for a fuse-at least.
