I am on my 3rd trailer with EZ-lube, and no problems. If you purchased your trailer used, you never know if someone hand packed, and did not replace the proper double lip seals.
I do like you described, checking every 3 years or so, for any problems. I grease bearings and adjust brakes as needed.

I think EZ-Lube gets a bad rap because many continue to confuse them with Bearing Buddy's which are a whole different animal.
