One of the biggest issues with the pancake motor design on these fans is that the "dust" from the brushes wearing down has nowhere to go..it literally clogs the motor and causes failure... carefully clean out the dust and drill a couple of holes in the side of the housing to let future dust escape and you motor will last much longer....remove the armature if you are not sure you can avoid it (the white spinner part)...if you drill into it, the motor will not work right....

I would think that if there is so much "dust" from brushes wearing down after so much use that the fan stops working then the fan has simply worn out. Drilling holes would invite more exterior dust.
