I still think for the novice, having a remote display, all in one, like one of these kits, is worth it! Not needing to know where and how to wire shunt/meter(s).
You don't need a shunt or meter to make solar panel work - only a controller. Display is nice for educational purposes, yes, but on cheap low-current controllers it's about same useful as those red/yellow/green indicators that such controllers normally have.
The 30A controller by Phocos they include at very low cost, is reportedly good for nothing. One user recently bought it with this kit, DOA, returned/replaced, barely works, and bought $80 controller by Morningstar.
Other items included in the kit are:
1) 40 FT 10 Gauge AWG PV Solar Cable w/ MC4 Connectors - you can buy it at any solar store or Amazon for $30-40, and you have to cut it in half to use bare ends on controller. No need to tin anything, at this low current.
2) Z Bracket (4 Pack) - no good for RV roof mounting and useless for portable setup.
3) 100 Watt 12 Volt Solar Panel - the only useful item.
