If you buy too few watts you are certain to be disappointed. The Phocos controller is junk and one person went through three of them without success.
I'd far rather see you buy panels and a GOOD controller.

I understand all that. What you are missing is the appeal of the HF kit is that it is easy to set up and cheap. There are some of us who would like to play with solar as long as it is easy to set up and cheap. There are plenty who have pointed out how junky the HF kit is. I have searched for a similar priced kit to play with and have not found one. I thought perhaps someone could suggest a similarly priced set of components that might be fun, educational, and even a little useful.
