I understand all that. What you are missing is the appeal of the HF kit is that it is easy to set up and cheap. There are some of us who would like to play with solar as long as it is easy to set up and cheap. There are plenty who have pointed out how junky the HF kit is. I have searched for a similar priced kit to play with and have not found one. I thought perhaps someone could suggest a similarly priced set of components that might be fun, educational, and even a little useful.
It's not easy to setup and it's not cheap. You get three not so efficient panels and a not so easy to assemble PVC frame to mount the panels to. You then have to plug in the converter and clamp that to your battery.
It's much simpler, cheaper, and easier to buy a single panel (from a source such as Solar Blvd), plug that into a converter, hook that up to your battery. You go through the same steps to set up, but no assembly required. Just prop the panel up into the sun with a stick.
You will end up with a system that's cheaper, lighter, smaller, and easier to deploy and store. You would also end up with much more watts
