It's more like a "hundred", not "hundreds". Difficult to compare, because PWM are mostly low-current units. 15A or 20A MPPT would cost $100 to 150 more than PWM, if you compare apples to apples, i.e. within one brand (or at least "a brand").
As to the OP question on no-name units and related question of making a good clone - possible, and yet this is taking chances. Considering that this is a VERY long term investment, 10 years or more, I prefer buying a brand.
