float voltage

Hi red31,

I plan on disabling auto equalization. btw it is every 30 days for a scant 2 hours.

I'll bump up the float value to 13.6 as the Float charge is supposed to be between 13.5 to 13.8 @ 77 F (25c)

Forgive me! I know pt asked about 13.2 float vs 13.6, but I made the assumption he'd be charging daily to 14.4v, holding it for 2 hrs then float.

I don't think it would take many watts to raise the voltage to 14.4 or to hold it at 14.4 for some time. Would 2 hrs @ 14.4v be too much a daily charge for AGM in storage?

IIRC, I did the default setting (14.6, 2hrs,13.2) for 4 months on a new g24 with no change to sg. My controller is easily adjusted to shorter abs and lower voltage.

The batteries need minimal charging to compensate for the no-float hours. With completely disconnected batteries as Spock would say "Captain, it would not be logical to force the batteries to do something they do not wish to do".

If upon application of 13.6 volts in the morning the batteries take an ampere for less than a half-minute before reverting to float this adds up to be a total of single digit amp hours for a full year. Sorta resplitting a split hair dont' cha think?

In storage, my Morningstar controller goes into absorption for a few minutes every morning and it pushes 14.4V at the banks, followed by a float of 13.6V (all of this temp compensated). If I check voltage at 7:00 PM in the Winter it will be around 13.6--13.8V. If I check it in the morning before the sun comes up, it will be close to 13.6, the float voltage I'm aiming for. This is all with no use and no loads on the banks. I have battery alarms and no other parasitic draws. It's definitely a balancing act.
