OP- to get the mostest out of solar and batts (2 or 4 GC's) in winter:
Ensure you have the optional external/remote temp sensor near/on the batts.
Seems your controller might have an adjustable bulk v setting. Bring it up to 14.8v, same with abs. With the external temp sensor, don't be surprised if you see 15+v with low outside temps.
Tilt those panels a lot (at least 30*), hopefully toward true south.
Try to keep the snow off the panels during the day. 8>)

The compromise I made with DW was to use the cat heater only during the day and the furnace is used at night. This did save a few amphours.
