Freezer works/Frig not

Our refrigerator was working fine when we hooked up. (30amp). Then after a few hours frig quit but freezer still working.
Any ideas? Dometic in 2012 Sunseeker

  • Well, thank goodness, my fridge is not "done for".
I have been having other issues as well, like batteries not charging, Kuerig coffee pot not following through, etc. A friend of ours checked some things for us and found out the converter was bad...so, new converter, problem solved. I would never have figured this one out. We have so much to learn about this coach.
If someone is not knowledgeable about all this stuff we are just at the mercy of RV repair shop.

Thank God for good, knowledgeable friends friends and RV net forum!

I can't believe a unit this age is failing. Don't they usually last longer. We've had some OLD campers and the frig worked good in them!

You are jumping the gun here. Until you have it professionally checked, you may have a simple problem and solution.

Not if they have been run off level enough times that it now has a blockage. There are 2 ways to destroy a good Cooling unit.
    1. Run off level long enough or OFTEN enough and it gets a blockage that is permanent. Burping NEVER fixes a blocked cooling unit.
    2. Lack of or blocked off rear ventilation will "COOK" a cooling unit.
    3. Last, not user fault but the cooling unit leaks the ammonia charge. But this is usually evident by the yellow discharge somewhere usually at the burner area. Doug

  • Same cooling 'system' cools both freezer and food sections.

Freezer cooling down......food doesn't----------blockage in cooling unit between low temp evaporator (freezer) and high temp evaporator (food).

Unfortunately time for replacement of your choice----RV Fridge, Cooling Unit or Residential Fridge
  • Depending on the model, check the LAT switch. Check the venting- check the fans, if it has them. Turn it off, then back on after about an hour.
  • This is how an absorption reefer dies. As it cools the freezer first, when it starts loosing capability, it can't still cool the other part. You might try the "turn it upside down for a day" trick, but that has about a 50% chance in my experience. You can usually buy a rebuilt cooling unit for about half the price of new.
