How do you know it is only 1/2 full before it starts to vent?

Some possible causes. you'll need to get access to the tank and hoses to check them out.

1) vent hose has a kink, well actually drops down and forms a p trap. then air won't vent, p trap fills with water and water comes out. A lot more common build problemthat you might expect.

2) same thing with the fill tube, it drops down below the tank inlet and makes a p trap and messes with filling

3) Gilligan did the install and put the hole for the vent on the side of the tank instead of the top of tank, so you can't fill it all the way. Again, more common than you might think.

4) likewise on the fill, Gilligan put the fill inlet below the top of the tank, makes it a real PITA to fill completely.
