Fridge--two problems.

Norcold 1201 LRIM, 2002 Itasca Horizon, so the fridge has got to be pushing 12 years old. We have had it for it for 4 or 5 years. It gets a lot of use; we winter in Mexico and live in it 5 or 6 months there plus a few trips around the Island during the summer.

Today I turned the fridge on (propane) to start it cooling down for a trip in a couple of days.

Started cooling fine. An hour or so later I returned to the rig on another chore and heard a low pitched sound that I thought for a moment might have been a work boat in the bay, then realised that it was coming from inside the rig.

It is a sort of growling or throbbing noise, low in frequency, I would guess maybe 100Hz or so. Not quite pulsing, more throbbing, maybe a couple of times a second.

It is coming from the fridge, nearer the top than the bottom. When I open the fridge door the fans (normal sound) stop as does the throbbing sound. Fridge is still cooling well.

Outside, removing the panel I can still hear it but it is louder inside.

While outside looking in from the outside I noticed more rust than I would like to see on the cooling unit. I later returned with the camera to take some photos of it.

While doing so, the throbbing noise stopped! Fridge burner was still running, I went inside and there was no fan noise from the fridge either. I opened the fridge door and the light came on. I could still hear the gas burner.

Took the pics and left.

I'll have to come back to post those: DW says dinner is ready and we have two always hungry dogs so I better go while dinner is still there to enjoy!

Happier now: Coho Salmon steak in fennel and a touch of lime, peppers, beans and quinoa and a nice if I do say so myself home made Pinot Gris. The dogs got a bit of salmon skin.

So Problem # 1. Any thoughts from the description? I suppose I should be able to record and post an audio file but that is far beyond me!

Problem, or really question, # 2:

What are the thoughts of this cooling unit.

And taking it all together, what now?

    Hi,

The low throbbing may be cooling fans that are no longer running at the same speed. They are created a "beat frequency". My "add on" fans do that.

Good thought Don. I can't remember if the fans are supposed to run all the time the burner in on. When I left the rig, I could hear the burner but no fans. And of course, no noise. I'll go up and check before I go to bed and report back!

  • At that age if cooling unit has not been replaced you may see a ton of rust from rain that can get on the cooling unit. Not sure the rust you can see is harmful but I know what you can not see can put a hole in the cooling unit inside the foam block.
