Fuel in the generators oil

OK, so I left the fuel cock open last Fall and the fuel drained through the system. Most of it ended up on the garage floor, but it now appears that some ended up in the oil. I had forgotten about this potential problem and ran the gen for about 15 minutes before shutting it off and changing the oil. The oil was runnier than it should have been and darker, and you could smell it. The generator fired right up though and still seems to run well, though it may have more engine noise now.

It's a Yamaha EF2800i. Any thoughts or recommendations?

  • Had that problem on my 6500 watt at the s&b. Asked the repair shop about and their suggestion was to change the oil and just keep an eye on it. They didn't seem too concerned about, like itwas fairly common, which surprised me. Haven't had any other problems with it.
  • The fact that it didn't blow up or catch fire, is a big PLUS for you:)
I think you are probably fine now, and should be fine.

The oil (even thinned) would probably be still good enough to keep the bearings good....though maybe you too a few hours of life out of them.

I'd recommend another oil change after a weekend of running (say 100 hrs), but you probably don't even have to do that.
