Furnace running requires hookup or engine running?

I’ve rented a 2012 sprinter airstream, class b, to run the furnance (lpg) I have to have van engine running, be hooked up to power, or generating running. This seems odd to me. It’s propane seems like...

The furnace should operate off 12 volts DC. If it works with the genny or motor running, it sounds like the house battery is either dead or out of the circuit. Check to see if there is a battery cut-off switch and, if so, what position it's in.
