furnace thermostat issue

I have a 2000 forest rivers camper that I bought this year. I had to do a bunch of misc things to it when I bought it which I was aware of but I still have one thing left furnace. Someone pulled the furnace out I am assuming to replace fridge which is above it and never replaced. I tested it at my house on 12v battery I hooked the red and yellow to battery and hooked both blue wires together for thermostat and blower motor kicked on. So I took it to camper last weekend while I was at campground and tried to hook it all up. When I hooked the wires up and flipped the switch on the wall thermostat from off down to heat the furnace did not kick on the a/c on did. I don't have any clue why every time I flip to furnace the a/c runs. I also need a new thermostat for the wall one of the switches is broke you have to use a key to flip it up or down. But I would like to just pick up a cheap digital one at homedepot but I am not sure about the switch for fan speed high or low. Or maybe I can get one of these if it will work for both. http://www.tomraper.com/parts_store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=240_874&products_id=15026

I replaced mine with a generic brand home t-stat from Lowes' that required nothing but a couple AA batteries. Just get one that has it's own batteries. As I recall, it was about $20, and has built in switches to control both furnace and a/c. The trick will be figuring out which wires to connect where to get it to do what the switches say, since whatever you've got is obviously hooked up wrong.

The T-Stats you speak of don't have a switch for A/C fan SPEED. Unless one wants to have the speed stuck either high or low they will have to add a switch.

  • Do a search for Hunter Thermostat replacement. I have replaced mine in my Cedar Creek. You have to be a bit handy but there is a schematic out there that shows how to install a Single Pole Single throw switch into the Hunter thermostat that adds the high/low fan control. I can take a picture of mine this weekend if you would like. I also have the old thermostat that came with the unit that you are welcome to have if you want to pay the shipping from Canada.
  • Lots of posts about converting to a hunter Douglas thermostat around the internet. About 20 dollars plus a mini SPST switch is all you need plus the instructions. As for your current problem. It sounds like the current thermostat is sitting in A/C mode. There should be a small switch to select heat-A/C that needs to be set.
