Well, this got my curiosity up enough that I went to Amazon and read some reviews. And guess what? As I wondered, it's the "safety feature" that's at the bottom of this phenom. It vents internal pressure built up as a result of heat, but seals so well against spills that the vacuum created during cooling only seals it tighter as everything inside contracts. And I mean EVERYTHING- here'a quote from one guy who received his brand new empty can with a noticeable dent in it that could have been caused only by cooling of the
air inside:

My Eagle Type II 5 gallon gas can also arrived with the previously noted dent. The Amazon outer box was not damaged and the Eagle box initially appeared undamaged. However, the expected dent was there. (I ordered this can even though other Amazon reviewers warned me of the dent.) To my surprise, when I opened the fill/vent, the dent popped out leaving no sign of damage.
source of quoteAlso interesting to note his reference to " the expected dent". Evidently (no pun intended) this phenom is fairly well known in some circles.
