They should not. the EPA requires that they NOT breath or if they do the out-gas breath has to pass through something like activated charcoal vapor capture canistor same as the gas tank on your car.
The solution is 3/4 fill, never fill beyond 3/4 mark Even that won't be enough if you fill it in AZ in August and then spend January in Northern AlASKA.
