I will put it simple.
Of all the common lead acid batteries GEL, which in large (more than say 20 amp hours) has all but been eliminated by AGM is the worst choice for RV use.. Gel batteries are very very fussy eaters, you feed them too fast, Or too much and they are toast, as you noted you run them down too far and they are toast, and they do not freeze well they are also as expensive as AGM.
AGM, on the other hand... Is one of the best choices if money is no object, Depending on the brand AGM's can be charged much faster than a GEL, have lower internal resistance, recover from a deep discharge better and are more resistant to freeze damage.. In short, Since the cost difference between GEL and AGM is ... Not much. AGM wins in evey category
Finally we have good old flooded wet cells.. Like the GC-2 Golf car battery.
DEEP CYCLE flooded wet,, best bang for your buck.. but there are some cases where that is not all that true.
