Generac NP-66 2 volt output

I have a 1995 Generac NP-66 in a 1995 Rexhall Aerbus. I went out to do the monthly generator exercise and the generator started right up as usual. But I noticed that there is no output. I checked the generator at the circuit breakers and I am only getting a 2 volt output on both sides of the circuit breaker. Yes I flipped the breakers several time with no luck. This thing has been slow to start the output a couple of times but now no output even after an hour of running.
Can anybody give me a pointer as to what to check on the generator?:h
  • Update. I did check all the connections that I could get to by removing the cover over the pc boards and saw no hot/burned connections or any corrosion. I did take each connection and pulled it off then back on again to clear any dirt. At that time that did not fix the problem. I gave the genny time as I posted this problem to this and several other forums. When I went to check the excite circuit I started the genny and all worked okay. FM.:h
I ran that genny for 3 hours today and all went okay so we will see. I did have someone on a different forum suggest that I didn't hold the start switch on long enough to start the excite circuit. Don't know about that but I did hold the start switch a little longer.
Generator Jim, Once I have time and figure out how to get at the brushes I will follow your suggestion to clean the slip rings.:B
Thanks to all that helped and I hope this thing stays working as I will need it in mid March.:C
  • Check for bad connections on the control board output to the brushes. Check the brushes and slip rings for corrosion and high resistance. Clean with commutator stone or a "greenie pad" from the kitchen. Do not use emery cloth.

  • Most likely cause is a poor connection before a bad part. Look at everything for any corroded or hot/burned connections. Remove and reinstall any push on connectors. We recently fixed one on here that would not shut off with the wall switch. That one was in a TC. When the owner removed and reinstalled a connector on the generator, that fixed it. A dirty connection was not letting the circuit shut it down.
  • rjxj - I like that idea, as looking at the repair manual I found on line I think the problem is the excite circuit and I was headed out to do some checking. When this happens again I will try your idea.

    Many Thanks
  • Follow up, After some research, or about 2 hours, I went out to check some things and tried the genny. Everything now works as it should. This is frustrating as I do not want this to give trouble on the road and I am leaving mid march.:?
  • Without looking at a wiring schematic or knowing right off how they excite the start up circuit, I will just throw this out there as just by chance it may help you. It wont hurt you but it may help.

With the gen running lug in an electric drill motor a hold the trigger on and spin the drill motor by hand. I have done that trick on portable units that have lost their residual magnetism in the rotor. Yours has not sat long enough for that to happen normally. It normally happens on units that have sat a long time. It's worth a try but dont hurt yourself or wrap your shirt sleeve up if it takes off.
