Frankly, I think the Onan brand is shot. I am astonished how quirky the generators are. I get that American products are going to cost more, but they should be top-of-the-line quality, and it feels to me like Onan products are a **** shoot.
You can go by a Harbor Freight Predator 8750 max / 7000 run genset for $600. You could buy four of them for the price of a new Onan.
If I had a place where I could work on my RV at my leisure (darn HOA) I would figure out how to take one of those HF gensets, remove the fuel tank and battery, and shoe-horn it into where my Onan lives in my RV currently.
It's a shame because from what I gather Onan generators used to be pretty bullet proof. I don't know why they are so troublesome to troubleshoot and repair.
But when coils cost $150 and ignition control modules cost $100 and control boards cost $175, you can **** near replace the entire generator with a HF genset for the cost of troubleshooting and repairing an Onan.

Clip coupons and you can get one for less. I got one for 499.00 in Savannah. It was handy after hurricane last year. Had wiring to the house installed, runs well, water heaters, refrigeration, pretty much everything except the HVAC, we have a window unit we can put in the bedroom and sleep cool. It runs 12 hours on a tank of gas as well. Always starts with one pull. I exercise it monthly under load.
