Your OEM tank in the Ford has a fuel pump in the tank and the mounting plate for the fuel line and gauge sending unit is attached. I don't think you want to mess with that.
You could buy an auxiliary tank but they are expensive. These offroad Rotopax containers look really safe. The original Jerry can is hard to improve upon but is heavy for some folks.
