Generator issue

We took our first trip this past weekend with our new (to us) class c motorhome. I tried to run the generator while driving and it kept cutting out even before we got on the highway. It runs great while stopped but when driving it dies when you make a turn. Anybody have any ideas of what may be wrong? Thanks

  • I don't know about the 4000, but there are two ways to check the oil level on the 2800, and only one is correct. On the 2800, you can check the oil with the dipstick plug screwed in or not screwed in. The correct method (from the owner's manual) is with the plug _not_ screwed in, just resting on the lip of the hole.

Checking with the plug screwed in will result in the oil level being low.

If the 4000 uses a threaded dipstick, check your owner's manual to be sure which way is right for yours.

  • On my previous rig the (older) Onan would do the same thing. What fixed my cutting off issue was a new fuel pump. The old one was intermittantly defective, and movement was a factor.
  • I'd suggest checking ALL 120VAC connections in the breaker box AND Xfer switch while your at it.

Just BE CAREFUL. Even with genset NOT running and NOT plugged into shore power you can still find 120VAC if you have an inverter that's not shut down.

I found one loose connection in my 93 Pace Arrow Diesel Pushers 50AMP transfer switch. I was lucky it did not get too hot to cause damage.
Look over ALL connections for ANY discoloration. A loose connection can get VERY HOT. I had a treminal on one of the house batteries get so hot water sizzled when it hit the bad connection, that's on the 12VDC side!!
Again, be VERY CAREFUL! I'm alergic to high voltage and I bet others are as well.
  • I had a similar issue. It turned out to be low oil level. There is a sensor that shuts down the gen when the level is low. When I checked it on level ground the oil was just a touch low but not low enough that I was concerned about adding any. I then paid close attention to when it would die and it was always when coming to a stop, going over railroad tracks, around sharp turns, etc. Putting 2 + 2 together then adding enough oil to bring it to full the problem went away.

    Low fuel level maybe?

This was my first thought as well. Especially since it only happens on turns, which, in turn (no pun) could lead to a gas level misreading if your gas tank was on the lower end of full.
